Wheaton Elementary to host first daddy-daughter dance
Daddy-daughter dances offer a great opportunity for parents and children to connect with each other, and Wheaton Elementary School is throwing its first ever daddy-daughter dance on Friday, from 7-8:30 p.m.
Trish Wilson, Wheaton Elementary School principal, said the Parent Teacher Community Organization (PTCO) is the group sponsoring the dance.
“They also put together a mom-son game night on Jan. 18,” she said. “Those are both new activities that the PTCO brought to life.”
Wilson said the PTCO is always looking for ways to get parents involved with their children, and they look for activities that bring families together on the school’s campus.
“Students were sent home with letters, and if they plan to attend, then they return the form saying they plan to come to the event,” she said. “There is no cost to the parents or students, however, we set up a backdrop for the parents and children to get a picture for a minimal cost.”
Wilson said these events are available to the entire elementary school, pre-K through sixth grade.
“We think these events will happen once per school year, because we don’t want to do it too often and ruin the excitement,” she said. “The mom-son game night was set up with ‘minute to win it’ type games, and we had several people attend that event.”
Wilson said there has been a huge response to the daddy-daughter dance so far.
“There will be refreshments, snacks, backdrop for photo opportunities, and there will be a DJ playing music,” she said. “I have heard comments from students and parents talking about how excited they are to get all dressed up for a dance.”
Wilson said she thinks that these types of events are a morale booster for both students and families.
“Any time we can get parents, grandparents and families on the school campus together, it helps build positive relationships,” she said. “It helps by giving the parents an opportunity to get involved.”
Wilson said she had seen these events done at other schools, and it is always a fun night.
